BRACELET WEARERS
The Vietnam War became distinctive with many adaptive
military personalizations. In addition to Cammies, Boonie Hats, and Insignias,
many American Servicemen returned home from Vietnam wearing plain brass
bracelets given to them by the Montagnard hill tribesmen they had fought
with. To the wearer, the bracelet stood for comradeship - a bonding with
a faraway friend who remained in danger.
In the late 1960's, Americans concerned with the status and treatment
of missing and captured Servicemen borrowed the idea to create the POW-MIA
Bracelet to create a National public awareness campaign.
The original plain aluminum bracelets evolved into red-anodized aluminum,
stainless steel, copper, brass, and nickel plated versions. Their
popularity spawned a blue-anodized aluminum bracelet for those remaining
unaccounted for from the Korean War. A black-anodized
aluminum version is now engraved for anyone Killed In Action from any
of America's Wars. The Vietnam KIA bracelet is engraved with the individual
Panel Number from The Wall in Washington, D.C.
